Young leaders debate – Wed 28th April

In two weeks time I will be taking part in a youth leaders debate:

It’s the final episode of Uni-Q Series 2 and with the election coming up, we’ve decided to make it a special one.

For the first time in British election history, the three leaders of the main parties will be taking part in televised debates. But will these debates cover the issues that matter to students and young people across the UK??

We’re not entirely convinced they will, so Uni-Q will be hosting the first ever YOUNG LEADERS DEBATE – your chance to find out which party best addresses the needs of young people across the country.

On Wednesday, April 28th, the show will be filmed at The Venue in University of London Union (with the bar open!)

Our hosts Gavin and Sofia will be joined by a panel of the Leaders of the three student wings of Labour, Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats, and we need your questions to put to them

Come and celebrate the announcement of a General Election with the birthday boy and girl (and Conservative Parliamentary candidate) Michelle Donelan! (Michelle’s turning 26 and Dom’s turning 33!)

This is also a semi-going away celebration before Michelle hits the campaign trail full time in Wentworth and Dearne and we want to send her off with her pockets full of cash to fight Gordon Brown’s Housing Minister at the election in Wentworth and Dearne!

CCA Local Government Conference 2010

The CCA Local Government Conference will be held on Friday 5th – Saturday 6th March 2010 at Hotel Russell, London.

The Conference will be attended by several members of the Shadow Cabinet, including Caroline Spelman MP, Shadow Minister for Local Government, and other key players in local government. Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, will also be addressing delegates, along with Party Chairman, Eric Pickles MP.

The conference will consist of several plenary and workshop sessions running from midday on the Friday until lunchtime on the Saturday. The Guest Dinner Speaker for the Friday evening will be Grant Shapps MP, Shadow Housing Minister.

South West CF Christmas Ball

On the 11th December we are going to be holding the first ever South West Conservative Future CF Ball in partnership with Exeter University Conservative Future.

The evening will be held at the exclusive St Olaves Hotel, Exeter.

The Evening is for those who are not involved in politics as much as it is for those who are involved in politics. It is an opportunity for us to come together, raise a glass and toast to the efforts we are going to have to put in for the General Election in 2010.

South Yorkshire CF Christmas Party

South Yorkshire Conservative Future is having a Christmas meal party for all of its members in Sheffield on Tuesday 15th December. Tickets are likely to be around £20.00. West Yorkshire CF Christmas Party

West Yorkshire Conservative Future is having a Christmas party for all of its members in Leeds on Friday 4th December at 7.30pm. Guest of honour is Patrick Mercer OBE, MP. Tickets are a mere £5.00, and that includes a free drink on arrival. Tickets are available to buy from Dan Paterson or Megan Glassey. If you can come, please do, it would be great to see you there. York Tories Christmas Ball

This year the York Tories Christmas Ball will be held at the wonderful Merchant Adventurers’ Hall on Friday 4th of December. We would love to see plenty of CF members attending. Tickets are £39 for CF members. Due to the historic nature of the building there is a ban on stiletto heels as they damage the floor. Conservative Future Christmas Party 2009

This year’s National CF Christmas Party will take place on Saturday 5th December at The Warwick.

During the day the National Executive are inviting down to London over 100 Branch, Area and Regional Chairmen for a General Election briefing event, and in the evening invite all CF members to join us for the annual National CF Christmas party.

Next year we will have a General Election and CF must be ready for the fight; this Christmas though we should celebrate our successes to date.

CF backs the Poppy Appeal

On Tuesday, 13th October Cities of London and Westminster CF launched our annual Poppy Appeal – and your branch should get involved too! In this post I’ll detail the few easy steps you need to take in order to start collecting for our veterans, service personnel and their families.

Our appeal was endorsed by Gerald Howarth MP, Shadow Defence Minister for procurement and the Royal Air Force, and marks the start of our third year collecting. To date we’ve raised nearly £8,000 and hope to smash to £10,000 mark this season.

How to involve your branch:

The Royal British Legion operate the Poppy Appeal through a system akin to constituencies, with each area having a base of operations from which poppies and distributed to and which full collection tins are returned.The best way to involve your branch is firstly to call Legionline on 08457 725 725 (Mon to Fri, 10am – 4pm) and explain that you’re the from the local Conservative Future branch and would like to put your activists at the Legion’s disposal during the Poppy Appeal, asking to be put through to the local team in your region.
Once you’re spoken to your local team and explained that you have activists willing and eager to collect, and they’ve filled you in on how and where they can best use you, communicate with your CFers through the usual channels – email, facebook etc and ask them to volunteer for dates they can collect on. The appeal runs from October 24th to November 11th. In Westminster we aim to be out every weeknight after work for the commuter rush, and for longer sessions on weekends. Obviously, you tailor your collecting hours to what suits your area.
With your activists availability sorted you can communicate this back to the Legion, and work out the logistics of collecting Poppies and tins from the nearest depot. It’s a good idea to get these in advance as whilst not heavy they are bulky if you’ve got a team of any size to cater for!
All the collect tins are numbered so at the end of the Appeal the Legion will inform you how much each member of your team collected - liaise with your local Poppy centre as to how this works.

The Poppy Appeal depends entirely on volunteers. I first got involved in 2007, after hearing that the 2006 Appeal had been 2000 collectors short in London alone. I’d always assumed such a noble and respected campaign would be fully signed up, but it’s not the case.

Getting involved with the Poppy Appeal is a great way for CF to use its resources to benefit others, whilst affirming our commitment to the military covenant.

YBF Activist Training Conference 2009

The 6th Young Britons’ Foundation Activist Training Conference will take place from lunchtime on Friday, 23 October 2009 to lunchtime Sunday, 25 October 2009 at Wellington College, Berkshire.

This year’s YBF Conference will be much more interactive, with students working closely with mentors as they discuss how to handle a political war-game over the course of the weekend. Students will also get the chance to devise campaign strategy and design campaign materials, debate issues with conservative movement leaders and hone campaigning skills in readiness for the general election next year.

Party Conference social action project

This year’s Conference Social Action Project is working to transform the Radcliffe Girls and Boys Club.

Radcliffe Girls and Boys club started as a boys’ football club in the late 1960’s and evolved into a Girls and Boys club in the early 1970’s. The club was founded by Ronnie Morris, a former Conservative Mayor of Radcliffe, and his son, Cedric Morris is still involved with the club.

Since the 1970’s it has settled into its current role as a general activities club for young people from age 7 upwards. The older children often help out with the activities for the younger ones. An average of 48 Children attend weekly and the club is open for 47 weeks of the year. The management and the staff are all volunteers who are committed to providing a safe place for local children to play and take part in new and different activities.

Young people thrive when they have somewhere to belong. When they are bored with nowhere to go, they are effectively forced to hang out on the streets and this can lead to antisocial behaviour. Youth clubs like Radcliffe Girls and Boys club can help young people to learn right from wrong, they can be a strong guiding influence in young peoples’ lives and help sustain their hope and energy, particularly in disadvantaged areas.

However, many small youth clubs need support to enable them to work effectively at local level, that’s why we are supporting Radcliffe Girls and Boys Club by helping them to:

renovate the building and grounds
increase community involvement in the club
enhance the facilities and programme of activities

Local action days have been taking place throughout the summer and during the Conference you are invited to do your bit and lend a hand to renovate the club. Finally, to celebrate the project, the Girls and Boys club will be holding a community festival on the afternoon of Wednesday 7th October.

What?
Every visitor to the social action project will be invited to take part in various gardening or DIY activities; planting, painting and carpentry.

On Wednesday afternoon there will be a community festival where we will be celebrating the launch of the new look club – come along and be part of the festivities.
