5 min Q&A with…Carl Walters

18 November 2009 Philip Smith No Comment

Name: Carl Walters
Role: Chairman, York St John University CF

What makes you a Conservative?

I believe in Conservative values, and I think that the Conservative Party has brought the right policies to the table to help sort out the mess that this country is in. The way that the Labour Party has treated the British military is unacceptable, and a Conservative government is needed to save the lives of Britain’s fighting men.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on establishing a new branch of Conservative Future at York St John University, where I study History.

Who is your political hero?

My political hero is William Hague, because of his impressive ability to wow the crowd with his speeches. He is a very intelligent man, and has the ideas to back up what he says. Everybody loves a bit of Boris though!

When do you think the next General Election will be?

I think that Gordon Brown will cling to power for as long as he possibly can, because he knows that the country is against him. If I were asked to pick a date I would say the 7th of May.

Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

People should stand up for what they believe in, and make their voice heard. Not only is it a political organisation though, it’s also a social one, and a great place to meet new people.

You have done a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan, tell us a bit about what that was like?

My time in Afghanistan was both the hardest, and the most rewarding time of my life. I worked as part of the RAF Regiment, an infantry front line unit, in Kandahar province Afghanistan. It was fantastic to see the positive impact that the coalition forces are having on Afghanistan.

Not enough media focus is put on the positive effect that we’re having in the country – we have provided electricity for over 2 million homes, we have built schools and provided fresh running water. Before I deployed to Afghanistan I was fully against British soldiers being there, but since seeing the impact we’re having on peoples lives I believe that it is an honest, and worthwhile cause.
