5 minute Q&A with…Serene John-Richards

5 May 2009 Patrick Sullivan One Comment

Name: Serene John-Richards
Role: CF Student Life Committee

1. Why are you a Conservative?

I strongly believe in the role of the individual in society. It is a shame that we find ourselves in a society desperately looking to blame rather than accept individual responsibility. The protection of freedoms is also an issue I care passionately about, the 1984-esque Britain we are heading towards will undermine all that previous generations have fought for. Mix that in with fiscal responsibility and a healthy relationship with the EU – and by that I mean a strictly non federal union, but rather a sharing of culture and ideals – and you’ve got yourself a Tory.

2. What are you working on at the moment?

Exams!! Nearly over though, and looking forward to a four month summer holiday.

3. Who is your political hero?

I find this the most difficult question. On the one hand I would have to say Margaret Thatcher, not least because she allegedly only got four hours of sleep a night, legend. And on the other, I’m sorry but I would have to say Gore Vidal. He has led such an interesting life so far, his passion and controversy never fail to amuse me.

4. When do you think the next general election will be?

You know, many people may disagree but I have been banking on a Summer 09 election for quite some time now.

5. Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

Delivering leaflets is the best job in the world. Explaining the difference between junk mail and constituency literature, encounters with domestic animals… Nothing beats the hotties though.
