Happy St George’s Day!

23 April 2009 admin No Comment

Today is St George’s Day – a day on which we celebrate all things English. After all, enough effort goes into celebrating Burns’ Night and St Patrick’s Day. It’s only right that we fly the flag of St George with pride.

There are some (namely, town hall employees with too much time on their hands) that would have us believe that this country’s flag is somehow offensive or even aggressive. True, it is most commonly seen hanging from the car window on match day, but does that make it offensive? And who exactly is it meant to offend? The Scottish? The Welsh? One can hardly step foot in the Celtic corners of this country without being swamped by various components of the Union Flag. No, today is not a day to discuss, in politically correct terms, the social and cultural implications of flag waving.

It is instead a day where all Englishmen, regardless of their race or religion, can stand up and say “I am an Englishman living in a United Kindgom.” This is what will promote social cohesion, not the divisive policies of the left. I actually read a piece on LabourList last month that suggested, in absolute seriousness, that in order to “reclaim the flag from the far-right” there should be a month where white people aren’t allowed to fly it, and all other ethnicities should be encouraged to do so. I kid you not.

What’s wrong with just letting things happen naturally? I for one will be flying the flag of St George from my car today, and I don’t even like football.
