5 minute Q&A with…Emma Carr

17 April 2009 admin No Comment

Name: Emma Carr
Role: CF Regional Chairman for the North East

What are you currently working on?

I am finishing off my plans to double the number of branches within the region. The existing branches in the region are based around Universities and I am very keen to ensure that the new branches have a greater focus on attracting non-Students and School aged activists. We are also currently working on adding a Graduate Officer to our Regional Exec.

Who is your political hero?

I think it would have to be Boris Johnson for making politics personable and interesting to young people. I think the problem with politics at the moment is that young people have no political figures that they can relate to and I think Boris becoming Mayor of London is helping to change that.

Of course I am also going to say Margaret Thatcher for setting the standard for all women in politics.

When do you think the next General Election will be?

I think Gordon Brown will call a general election at the last possible moment. I think he is going to be too busy attempting to be an Economic International guru and forming a ‘special relationship’ with Obama to concentrate on political affairs in this country.

Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

Because it is an organisation which is welcoming and good fun. You really feel like you are making a difference when you’re working with your local councillors or PPCs and at times that can be quite exhilarating. You also can make some really good friends and suddenly have a rather busy social calendar.

Pick one thing about the last 12 years of the Labour government that you would change?

I think its impossible at the moment to pick one thing that I would change.

As a student I have to say the creation of tuition fees. If it isn’t bad enough that we have the threat of not being able to find a job when we graduate and have little chance of getting on the housing ladder we now have upwards of £10,000 debt to pay off.

One of my other biggest annoyances is what I see as the breakdown of society and communities.
