5 minute Q&A with…Donal Blaney

25 March 2009 admin No Comment

Name: Donal Blaney
Role: Chief Executive of the Young Britons’ Foundation

What are you currently working on?

The Young Britons’ Foundation is about to launch a wave of audio, visual and written materials that will be available online at www.ybf.org.uk. These will tie into our campaigns against radicalisation of campuses, in support of our troops and to make younger voters aware of what the EU is costing them. There are also some exciting development afoot on my personal blog, Blaney’s Blarney (http://donalblaney.blogspot.com) building on my online radio show…

Who is your political hero?

Ronald Reagan. He took on his party’s establishment, rebranded the Republican Party, campaigned proactively and with dynamism, communicated optimism, reduced the power and size of the state and freed millions enslaved by communism. That’s a pretty impressive record in anyone’s language.

When do you think the next General Election will be?

May 2010. The Conservatives will win with a majority of 40.

Why should people get involved with organisations like Conservative Future?

Without an effective and organised presence among younger voters in schools, colleges, universities and workplaces, the Conservative Party won’t be able to communicate its values and vision to the electorate. CF can and should be much more than a recruiting sergeant for the Party. Its members must be the political and campaigning heart of 21st century conservatism. Without a vibrant youth movement, conservatism risks being moribund and freedom will not be defended from the inevitable encroachment of the state.

Pick one thing about the last 12 years of the Labour government that you would change?

Simple. The Human Rights Act. The most pernicious, harmful and wrongheaded piece of legislation dreamt up by lawyers for lawyers. And I say that as a lawyer!
