Behind Closed Doors?

13 January 2009 Owen Meredith No Comment

Recent events have reminded us all just how open and accessible the internet really is, and how vulnerable to attack we can be.

We live in a high-technology world, with 24/7 news media that has a lot of air time to fill. As individuals it is important that we all take responsibility for our own actions, and think of the consequences.

When attending CF or Conservative Party events, or if you hold any position within CF, your actions can reflect on your position and therefore the Party. So make sure you act in an appropriate manner.

By no means does this mean being a member of CF makes you responsible to the Party 24/7. You have your own private life, outside of the Party, and being a member is simple an expression of support – not a subscription to a lifestyle. Your private actions remain just that, private.

As the saying goes, “What goes on behind closed doors, stays behind closed doors.”

But as we all become increasingly comfortable using technology in our day-to-day lives, and publishing our thoughts, feelings and private moments in blogs on facebook and across the internet; we must remember that however comfortable we feel, the internet has no closed doors. The internet is not a private forum, your facebook page is not only shared between you and your friends, and a blog is accessible to the world.

Before you upload to the net, think twice, and think “do I really want the whole world to know this?”

YBF have issued some useful guidance on how to improve security on Facebook, which I would encourage all our members to read and take action on: http://www.ybf.org.uk/2009/01/how-to-protect-your-facebook-photos-and-content-and-avoid-getting-into-hot-water/
